One Zone Colder Than the Lakeshore
Spray Foam Insulation in Fremont plans for a colder climate than Muskegon. OpenEI's county list puts Newaygo County in Climate Zone 6A, one step colder than Muskegon County's 5A. ENERGY STAR's attic targets are the same in both zones (R-60 for an uninsulated attic), but longer heating seasons make air sealing and depth pay back faster here.
History
Settlers led by Daniel Weaver arrived in 1855, and Fremont Township was named that November for explorer John C. Fremont. Settlers cleared the timber to farm; in the 1870s Dutch families came from Holland and Muskegon. A major forest fire in 1871 damaged the lumber mills, but the town rebuilt and even supplied lumber to rebuild Chicago after its Great Fire.
Housing
Fremont had 4,516 residents in 2020, with a median age of 40.1 and nearly a quarter of residents 65 or older. Older homes in town sit on basements; farms and rural homes around it have barns and steel buildings.
What we see most
Older Fremont homes often have thin attic insulation, open bypasses, bare rim joists and empty walls. Newer homes usually need attic depth and rim joist sealing. Farm buildings need foam on steel.
Elevation
Fremont sits at about 817 feet, higher than the lakeshore, and farther from the lake's moderating effect.
Dutch heritage, older homes
Fremont still celebrates the Dutch families who arrived in the 1870s, and some homes near downtown date from the decades that followed. Older houses with balloon framing, fieldstone or block foundations and small attics are common. Closed-cell foam on the foundation walls and rim, blocked and dense-packed walls, and a sealed attic are the usual plan.
Timing jobs in a colder zone
Basements can be insulated any time of year. Attics, crawl spaces and unheated outbuildings are easier outside the deepest cold, because foam has to be applied within a working temperature range. Booking the estimate in late summer or early fall gives the most choice of dates.
